Now it's Pavano's turn to sigh (relief)

       Just as Andy Pettitte had a chance to say "whew" for getting out of the second having only allowed one run, Carl Pavano can considre himself fortunate and somewhat successful for avoiding a meltdown in the Yankees'  fourth.

        Pavano showed the competitiveness for which he is not famous (that was quite a sequence at the news conference yesterday when Pettitte was asked what kind of competitive teammate Pavano had been and was gasping for the right thought).

          The problem for Pavano is that he's got to face a potential big inning just about every inning.

          With the Yankees, you wonder about the aggressiveness. They normally make a pitcher sweat by taking pitch after pitch. Against Pavano, they are first-pitch swinging. They did hit a lot of balls hard in that half-inning
