Sergio Mitre served up Reid Brignac's game winning home run in Tampa Bay's 1-0 victory Monday night.

That's what Mitre does. He has allowed seven homers in 49 1/3 innings this season and has averaged 19 a year in his big league career.

The term designated for assignment was invented for this type of player, but here he was in the 11th inning of a big game. He had long since failed in his in his audition as a starting pitcher when Andy Pettitte went down, but manager Joe Girardi still fiinds spots for him.

So, while Tampa Bay was going with top relievers Rafael Soriano (1.92 ERA), Joaquin Benoit (1.52) and Grant Balfour (2.45) to shut down the Yankees,  a scoreless game on the road was entrusted to Mitre.

Girardi told reporters he didn't want to risk hurting relievers Joba Chamberlain and David Robertson.

Instead, Mitre hurt the Yankees.
