The Yankees have signed veteran infielder Paul DeJong to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training, a baseball source confirmed on Sunday.

DeJong, 32, is a nine-year veteran who spent last season with Washington. He hit .228 in 57 games for the Nationals.

DeJong was once a budding star shortstop with the Cardinals. He finished second in the NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2017 and was an All-Star in 2019. But he has settled into a utility role over the last few seasons, bouncing around to five different teams since leaving St. Louis.

DeJong will give the Yankees insurance, joining Amed Rosario as a righthanded-hitting infield option with Anthony Volpe expected to start the season on the injured list after undergoing shoulder surgery.
