Posada DHs vs. Sox, will catch most games
BOSTON - Jorge Posada made his return last night as the designated hitter and Francisco Cervelli started at catcher, but Joe Girardi said no one should get used to seeing both catchers in the same lineup.
If Posada stays healthy, Girardi said, he'll likely do the majority of the catching, with Cervelli, who entered last night hitting .429, back on the bench. Cervelli still will play more than once a week but, as of now, not much more than that. "Our original plan with Cervy was either one out of three or one out of four," Girardi said. "So I don't see that changing a whole lot."
After Saturday's game, Girardi said that with no plans to have a third catcher on the roster, he is leery of having both catchers in the lineup at once.
"It becomes risky if you do it a lot," he said. "Having both catchers in there every day . . . If you take Cervy out and then Jorgie goes in, Jorgie gets nicked up, you're in trouble."
Aceves better
Alfredo Aceves, removed from Saturday's game with lower back stiffness, could be available as soon as Monday night in Detroit, Girardi said. "He feels pretty good," he said. "He'll play catch [today] and, you never know, he might be available."
Roster moves unlikely
The Yankees are carrying 13 pitchers but Girardi said a roster move is unlikely for the series against the Tigers, though he left open the possibility.
Extra bases
Girardi said Andy Pettitte (elbow inflammation), unhappy about being skipped this week, will play catch today, long toss tomorrow, throw a bullpen session Wednesday and start Saturday against the Twins at the Stadium . . . RHP Chan Ho Park will throw a bullpen session Monday and is likely to make a rehab appearance this week . . . Sergio Mitre, who starts Monday night in Detroit, will be on a pitch count of 65 to 75.
