Quick pitch by the Yanks?

The Yankees wanted Cliff Lee well before Andy Pettitte went down with a groin injury that will keep him sidelined for perhaps five weeks. That they could get Lee  in the off season as a free agent did not matter. The Yankee philosophy of win now, combined with baseball’s `you can’t have too much pitching’ prompted them to seek another pitcher. 

Despite what they may say at the moment, they will likely do the same now that Pettitte is out. A three game lead over Tampa Bay is not enough to rest easy with a rotation that, after CC Sabathia, has Phil Hughes, the uncertainty of Javier Vazquez, enigmatic A.J. Burnett and emergency replacement Sergio Mitre. Even Pettitte's return would not guarantee the Andy you saw in the first half. He's always been a second half pitcher, maybe it's the opposite this year. Remember, he's 38.  

Do not expect the non-waiver trading deadline of July 31 to come and go with the Yankees doing nothing. Starter, reliever, perhaps both.
