Red Sox beat Tampa with 44-year-old Wakefield
Boston obviously considers itself out of Wild Card contention. Why else did it start aged knuckleballer Tim Wakefield (4-10) instead of Clay Buccholz against Tampa Bay?
The Red Sox still won, 11-5, and Tampa Bay left Fenway 2 1/2 behind the Yankees. The Red Sox are nine out, but 6 1/2 in the Wild Card race.
Wakefield, who allowed four earned runs in five innings, became the oldest pitcher in franchise history to record a victory.
