Rough night for Bartolo Colon

What happened to Bartolo Colon Thursday night?

Colon was uncharacteristically hittable in the Yankees’ 5-1 loss to Tampa Bay, giving up five runs and a season-high 10 hits in 5.2 innings. He also matched his season-high five walks.

“I wasn’t throwing strikes, and every time I threw a strike, they hit the ball on me,” Colon said after the game. “There’s nothing I could do about it.”

Colon (6-4) entered the game having gone 4-0 in his last four starts with a 1.00 ERA. He ran into trouble right away as Ben Zobrist led off the game with a triple and scored on Evan Longoria’s single. And it just went downhill from there.

“I felt really good today. It was the location of everything that I threw that was the problem,” he said. “The sinker wasn’t sinking today.”

Colon said that the fact Derek Jeter was on the brink of the 3,000th hit milestone had no impact on his performance.

Said Colon with a laugh: “He’s the one who has to get the 3,000th hit, not me.”
