Span spoils perfection

There goes Phil Hughes first postseason perfect game. His efforts were felled by a Denard Span single to right field.

In his first postseason start, the 24-year-old retired the first nine batters he faced prior to that hit.

But Hughes remained “California Cool,” as general manager Brian Cashman likes to say. He got the next batter, Orlando Hudson, to ground into a double play before retiring Joe Mauer on a flyout to end the top half of the fourth.

Keep in mind, Hughes can still join Don Larsen as the only pitchers to face the minimum 27 in a nine-inning postseason complete game thanks to the Hudson double play.
