Steinbrenner to get plaque in Monument Park
TORONTO - Two events are planned in the next year to honor the life and legacy of George Steinbrenner, the family of the Yankees late owner announced Tuesday morning.
A monument honoring Steinbrenner will be unveiled in Monument Park on Sept. 20 before the game against the Rays. Additionally, the family said a tribute to his life will take place in Tampa before the spring training home opener in March 2011.
"We remain profoundly grateful and touched by the many expressions of sympathy and support from so many," the family said in a statement. "We wish to thank everyone for their kind thoughts and prayers, which we continue to hold close. We are especially appreciative that our family's privacy was respected as we grieved the loss of George."
"I think it's wonderful," Joe Girardi said. "I think rightfully so, he should be out there."
The family has mostly kept to itself since Steinbrenner's death July 13. "We know we will always share George's memory with Yankees fans everywhere," the statement continued. "And a monument in his honor to be located in Monument Park will reflect the special connection, appreciation and responsibility that George felt for New York Yankees' fans everywhere as they were always uppermost in his mind."
Jeter's squeaky wheel
Girardi said he sat Derek Jeter on Monday mostly because the shortstop had played 17 straight games, but in small part because of a sore lower left leg.
"His leg's been a little sore," Girardi said. "All our guys' legs are a little sore but he's had a little soreness. It doesn't really bother him except to slow down; not sprinting or going after balls, it's when he has to slow down. He's been dealing with it for a little bit but he's managing it and we're managing it."
Jeter was back in the lineup last night.
