The Yankees' long, strange week against the Orioles took another turn Thursday when the team's flagship radio station lost its connection, causing John Sterling to do his play-by-play call on his cellphone from Baltimore. The problem was traced to a widespread Verizon disruption affecting long-distance service, primarily in lower Manhattan, WCBS (880) said in a notice to its listeners.
The Yankees' feed originally was lost sometime in the fifth inning. Initially, the station picked up an audio simulcast from the YES Network.
Sterling and Suzyn Waldman then returned via cellphone with two outs in the fifth, and the regular feed came back in the bottom of the sixth.
