The goat of the game goes to....
The Yankees had plenty of blame to spread around after Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox. But we give the goat horns to the coaching staff for not telling leftfielder Randy Winn to play deeper with Jeremy Hermida at the plate.
There was an assumption that the lefthanded hitting Hermida, who came up with a .218 batting average, would not hit a fly ball to the opposite field off Mariano Rivera. But, with two outs and runners on second and third in a 5-5 game, Hermida went the other way and Winn, playing Little League depth in left, watched the ball sail over his head. At regular playing depth, it was an easy inning-ending out.
Winn appeared to get an earful from third base coach coach Rob Thomson in the dugout afterward. But where was Thomson, whose job duties include positioning the fielders, before the damage was done?
