Ventura's streak within reach
Florida International’s Garrett Wittels has hit in 54 straight games for his Division I college team. The sophomore infielder is four games away from matching former Met and Yankee Robin Ventura's NCAA record of 58 straight games, set in 1987 at Oklahoma State. Wittels’ team is in the NCAA Baseball Championship and will play Texas A&M this week.
Ventura was quoted this week: ``Joe DiMaggio’s record [56 straight games] was a lot different because of the way the game is, but college is pretty much the same. I expected somebody to do it and he [Wittels] looks like he has a great chance.''
Under NCAA rules, Wittels streak would carry over to next season if his team is eliminated in the tournament.
