Joba Chamberlain's second career save came as a surprise to the 41,571 fans on hand, since they were expecting Mariano Rivera.

But Chamberlain knew, obviously, that Rivera was still unable to pitch because of tightness in his left side, so the closer's role was Joba's, for a night.

"It's a different perspective. Usually I'm handing the ball to the best that's ever pitched, and tonight I got the ball from CC," said Chamberlain, who last saved a game Sept. 23, 2007, against Toronto. "Those are shoes you're never going to be able to fill, but you just have to do your best."

Rivera said last night he'll throw off the mound in the bullpen Tuesday and will be ready to close again if all goes well. Chamberlain would return to his setup role, but he got to be the last one out to the mound for a night.

Cano is player of month

Robinson Cano went 0-for-4 last night, just the second time in 25 games he's not reached safely. But he was named the AL player of the month before the game after hitting .400 (34-for-85) in April, with eight homers and 18 RBIs. He's the fourth Yankee to hit .400 or better in April, joining Clete Boyer (1961), Willie Randolph (1976) and Paul O'Neill (1994, 1996).

Also honored before last night's game were Mark Teixeira and Derek Jeter, who received their 2009 Gold Glove awards.

Swisher heating up

Nick Swisher went 3-for-3 with a double and two singles, including a shot in the fourth that hit 2 feet below the top of the rightfield wall and brought home Alex Rodriguez with the first Yankees run.

Swisher is now 8-for-12 with two homers and five RBIs in his last three games.

Derek Jeter and Mark Teixeira received their 2009 Gold Glove awards before the game. It was Jeter's fourth Gold Glove and Teixeira's third.
