Even considering the weekday afternoon starting time, the stands in Yankee Stadium were surprisingly uncrowded when Game 5 of the ALCS began just after 4 p.m. Wednesday. Entire rows were empty in some sections and there was a noticeable lack of buzz in the building.

It turned out, though, that most of the tickets for the unoccupied seats were held not by no-shows but by late arrivals.

By the time the Rangers batted in the top of the second inning, most of the seats that had been empty for the opening pitch were filled.
