The Yankees continue to bulk up as the race for American League playoff spots tightens.

Late Saturday night, they announced they had obtained righthanded-hitting infielder Amed Rosario from the Nationals. It was their second move in as many days after obtaining lefthanded-hitting third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Rockies.

The Yankees sent righthanded relief pitcher Clayton Beeter and minor-league outfielder Browm Martinez to the Nationals.

Rosario, 29, once was envisioned as the shortstop of the future for the Mets before becoming the key piece in a 2021 trade with Cleveland for Francisco Lindor and Carlos Carrasco.

Rosario primarily has played second base, shortstop and third base but also has started 42 games in the outfield. He is owed the remainder of his $2 million contract for this season and will become a free agent after it ends.

Rosario appeared in 46 games for Washington this season, posting a .270/.310/.426 slash line. His career slash line is .273/.308/.399. He has a .299/.333/.483 slash line against lefthanded pitching this season and a .298/.337/.462 slash line against lefties in his career.

His 42 triples since 2018 are the second-most in the majors.

The Yankees’ lineup is considered slightly lopsided with lefthanded batters, and Rosario could see a lot of action when they face lefthanded pitchers.

Whether he will be a key piece off the bench or part of a platoon with McMahon at third base remains to be seen.

At the end of play Saturday, only four games separated six teams vying for the three AL wild-card spots. After dropping 23 of their last 37 games, the Yankees held the top wild card by a half-game and were 1½ games from being on the outside looking in. They were 6 1⁄2 games behind AL East-leading Toronto.

Beeter has appeared in five games for the Yankees during his career and allowed six runs in 3 2⁄3 innings in two games this season. He was 1-0 with two saves and a 3.10 ERA in 20 2⁄3 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Martinez, 18, has spent two seasons in the Yankees’ organization. He was hitting .404 in 18 games with the Yankees’ team in the Dominican Summer League.
