Yankees' Cam Schlittler strikes out 12 in 7 1/3 innings in shutout win over Phillies

PHILADELPHIA — Cam Schlitter bounced back from a poor outing and pitched three-hit ball into the eighth inning as the Yankees earned a 1-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

Pitching on four days’ rest after lasting only 4 1⁄3 innings in a loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday, Schlitter struck out 12 in 7 1⁄3 innings and threw 68 of his 99 pitches for strikes. He allowed a double by Kyle Schwarber along with two singles and walked none.

Paul Goldschmidt led off the fourth inning with his 16th homer, an opposite-field shot to rightfield, for the only run of the game.

The Yankees (58-45) remained two games behind AL East-leading Tampa Bay.

Jesus Luzardo (9-5, 3.31 ERA) took the loss. He threw 105 pitches in seven innings, striking out nine and allowing three hits. The Yankees drew one walk and struck out 12 times.

Schlitter (10-6, 2.07 ERA) made Bryson Stott look bad on a strikeout to start the bottom of the eighth, but J.T. Realmuto singled on an 0-and-2 pitch and Gabriel Rincones Jr. was hit by a pitch.

Lefthander Brent Headrick allowed a single to right by Edmundo Sosa, with Realmuto stopping at third as Jasson Dominguez fielded the hit, to load the bases. Headrick then got Trea Turner to line out to leftfielder Cody Bellinger, with Realmuto again holding at third, and Schwarber grounded to second to end the threat.

David Bednar struck out Bryce Harper to begin the ninth. Bellinger ran down Brandon Marsh’s long fly to leftfield and Alec Bohm grounded out to third to end it.

Schwarber doubled with one out in the fourth, but Schlittler got Harper to ground out to first and struck out Marsh swinging. The Yankees loaded the bases with two outs in the fifth, but Goldschmidt grounded out to short.

Harper and the Yankees’ Ben Rice struck out three times each.

Yankees lefthander Ryan Weathers (3-7, 4.40 ERA) will start Saturday. The Phillies have not named a starter.
