As the Yankees and Mets get ready for four games in four nights beginning Monday night at Yankee Stadium and continuing Wednesday at Citi Field, here are position-by-position matchups:
CATCHER
Travis d'Arnaud vs. Brian McCann
Neither has produced much offensively so far. McCann has the track record and d'Arnaud has the potential. Check back in September to see which one picked it up.
Edge: Even
FIRST BASE
Lucas Duda vs. Mark Teixeira
Freed from the shadow of Ike Davis, Duda has put up essentially the same numbers as Teixeira, who gets points for returning with some pop from his wrist surgery.
Edge: Even
SECOND BASE
Daniel Murphy vs. Brian Roberts
Murphy continues his career trajectory as a solid-yet-unspectacular player. Roberts, after a slow start, has picked up some big hits lately.
Edge: Mets
SHORTSTOP
Wilmer Flores/Ruben Tejada vs. Derek Jeter
Seriously? Jeter would still win this matchup when he's 50 and has been retired for 10 years.
Edge: Yankees
THIRD BASE
David Wright vs. Yangervis Solarte
Solarte and the Mets captain each have two homers and Wright leads Solarte in RBIs, 21-20. The Mets might as well fold up shop if they don't win this one.
Edge: Mets
LEFTFIELD
Chris Young vs. Brett Gardner
Both players have lived up to their 2013 numbers. That's good news for the Yankees and not so much for the Mets.
Edge: Yankees
CENTERFIELD
Juan Lagares vs. Jacoby Ellsbury
Lagares has been the Mets' best player despite missing two weeks with a hamstring problem. So too for Ellsbury. He gets the nod for not getting injured -- yet.
Edge: Yankees
RIGHTFIELD
Curtis Granderson vs. Carlos Beltran
Beltran hasn't been spectacular, but Granderson has struggled so much it doesn't matter. Perhaps two games in friendly Yankee Stadium will help the Grandy Man.
Edge: Yankees
STARTING PITCHING
In order, matchups likely are Colon vs. Kuroda, Wheeler vs. Nuño, Tanaka vs. Mejia, Aceves vs. Gee. Yankees have big edge with Tanaka (it's unclear if Mejia will even start). Mets starters have been better overall.
Edge: Mets
BULLPEN
Even in the post-Mariano era, the Yankees still have a deep bullpen. The Mets don't really know who is pitching in which roles and how their relievers will fare from day to day. Tough to win 90 like that.
Edge: Yankees
BENCH
The Mets have made two moves in the last few days, adding Flores and Eric Campbell to boost the offense. The Yankees have gotten prime bench work from Ichiro Suzuki and John Ryan Murphy. The Yankees will lose their DH (Alfonso Soriano) in the two games at Citi Field. But the flip side is historically bad Mets pitchers will have to bat.
Edge: Yankees
MANAGER
Terry Collins vs. Joe Girardi
As long as Laz Diaz isn't the plate umpire, the Yankees should have the edge in the dugout. Collins does the best he can with what he has.
