There's a good chance Bartolo Colon could face the Mets Saturday, Joe Girardi said Tuesday. But first, the righthander must pass his evaluation.

Colon, who was en route to New York from the team's Tampa training facility Tuesday, has been on the disabled list since June 12 with a strained left hamstring. Girardi said the Yankees will determine his status Wednesday.

"Do we feel he is ready? We'll get a chance to look at him tomorrow and make that decision," Girardi said. "If he's healthy, if we feel that he's ready to go, there's a chance that he's going to pitch."

He said that a rehab start wouldn't be necessary for Colon, who threw 60 pitches in a four-inning simulated game Monday. Facing a National League team will present additional challenges for Colon, such as hitting and bunting.

"The concern for me is not his arm, it's to make sure his leg is healed, and that we'll check out," he said

Wrap on Grandy

Curtis Granderson fouled two balls off his leg and sported a tight wrap around his lower right shin after the game, but insisted he'd be good to go Wednesday night: "I came out because Girardi took me out. It wasn't because of this."

Training room

Righthander Phil Hughes is to make his third rehab start at noon for Double-A Trenton, but when asked if there's "any chance" Hughes will be ready after Wednesday's outing, Girardi said: "I can't tell you that. I'm looking forward to his start to see how he does." . . . Eric Chavez (fractured foot) is taking ground balls, hitting and lightly running, but "he's still not where he needs to be," Girardi said . . . Rafael Soriano (inflamed elbow) "felt good" after long-tossing, he added.
