Yankees morning links
Another Joe West special late into last night, but this one was surely worth the 3:47 length.
-- Erik Boland has the lowdown on the Yanks' come-from-ahead-fall-behind-come-from-behind win over the Red Sox at The Stadium. Alex Rodriguez as the opening act, Marcus Thames as the headliner? I'm sure you'll all take it.
-- Ken Davidoff reminds us that Thames has a history of proving the doubters wrong. You'll recall his first big-league at-bat, when Thames mashed Randy Johnson's first pitch for a HR at the old Stadium on June 10, 2002.
-- Speaking of 2002... A little over a month after Thames' unlikely debut, there was an even unlikelier HR: Indians utilityman Bill Selby's grand slam off Mariano Rivera. Jim Baumbach tracked down Selby, long retired and more than happy to recount his moment in the sun. Be sure to read the part where Enrique Wilson "introduces" Mo to Selby.
-- Welcome Back Baumbach also checks in from the visitors' side last night, giving us the lowdown on the Sawx meltdown, with some thoughts from Jonathan Papelbon on his less-than-stellar fastball last night.
-- And Anthony Rieber gives us the lighter side of Javier Vazquez, who got a chuckle out of getting the win in relief. And Vazquez's ERA is now a tidy 8.10!
-- Finally, there's Kimberley Martin with some honest words from Chan Ho Park, who, honestly, wasn't very good in allowing back-to-back homers in the seventh to cough up a 7-6 lead. Not a terrific return from a hamstring injury.
So much to link, we had to get started early. Back in a bit with some more on last night's display of power and fortitude from the Yanks; and is this yet another sign that the Sox aren't all they're cracked up to be this season?
