Yankees notes
By hitting his fourth home run in the three-game series against the Red Sox, Alex Rodriguez moved within one homer of hitting at least 30 in 13 straight seasons. The Yankees have six games remaining. One more homer would give him at least 30 in 14 of of his 15 full seasons.
Rodriguez's 29th homer was the 612th of his career. In 19 games this September, he is 23-for-69 (.333) with eight homers and 22 RBIs. He has 119 RBIs in 131 games this season.
Robinson Cano's run-scoring single off Jonathan Papelbon in the ninth inning gave him 105 RBIs.
Mariano Rivera blew a save for the fifth time in 37 opportunities and third in the last six. He has allowed six runs and nine hits in 52/3 innings in that span. Papelbon failed to convert a save for the eighth time in 45 opportunities.
The Blue Jays, the Yankees' next opponent, have hit 241 home runs in 155 games, led by Jose Bautista's 52, Vernon Wells' 30, Aaron Hill's 25, Adam Lind's 22 and Lyle Overbay's 20.
The Yankees have hit 196 homers in 156 games, led by Mark Teixeira with 32, Rodriguez with 29, Cano and Nick Swisher with 28 each and Curtis Granderson with 23. The Yankees lead the major leagues with 828 runs, 114 more than the Blue Jays.
The Yankees moved within a half-game of the Rays in the AL East. Tampa Bay has three home games against the Orioles and four road games against the Royals remaining. The Yankees have six games on the road, three against the Blue Jays and three against the Red Sox.
The Rays' magic number to clinch the AL East title is six. The Yankees' is eight. Tampa Bay would have to lose at least two of its seven games for the Yankees to have any chance of finishing first.
The Rays have the tiebreaker, so if they finish tied for first, the Yankees will get the wild card and face the Twins in the ALDS, with the Rays taking on the Rangers.
