Yankees lefthander Ryan Yarbrough, who had been scheduled to start Monday’s series opener in Cincinnati, instead was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right oblique strain Sunday.
Righthander Allan Winans will get the ball to face the Reds, manager Aaron Boone said Sunday before the Yankees beat the Orioles, 4-2, in the finale of their three-game series at the Stadium. It will be Winans’ first appearance for the Yankees.
Yarbrough has performed above expectations this season, going 3-1 with a 3.90 ERA in 16 appearances (eight starts), but Boone said there has been some discomfort in the oblique.
“My understanding [is] it’s something that’s been kind of coming on a little bit in his second-to-last start, and then a little more sore toward the end of this last start,” Boone said. “After his last start, [he] was pretty sore the next day. And then before he’s getting ready to throw his side [session] the other day, [he] felt like he couldn’t quite do it.”
Boone said imaging revealed a low-grade strain and added, “Hopefully [it’s] not something that keeps him down from throwing too long.”
Winans has made eight major-league starts — all with Atlanta — and is 1-4 with a 7.20 ERA. The Yankees acquired him off waivers from Atlanta in January and he has pitched exceptionally well in the minor leagues this season. He is 7-0 with a 0.90 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP and 59 strikeouts in 50 innings for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
“He’s been tremendous,” Boone said. “To be this deep in the season as a starting pitcher and have a sub-1 [ERA] — it’s been really, really excellent. Hopefully [he’ll] bring some of that up here with us tomorrow.”
Winans, 29, was drafted by the Mets in 2018 and played in their organization through the 2021 season before Atlanta snagged him in the Rule 5 draft.
Notes & quotes: Marcus Stroman will pitch another minor-league rehab game on Tuesday and Boone said the hope is that he can build up to 70 pitches “and then be in the mix.” . . . Paul Goldschmidt was out of the starting lineup for a second straight day, but it was not related to a health issue. Boone said he wanted lefthanded-hitting Ben Rice to face Baltimore righty Dean Kremer . . . The Yankees optioned lefty reliever Jayvien Sandridge to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre after the game. He was up twice this week but didn’t appear in a game.
