Yankees talking with Diamondbacks about Haren

The Yankees are engaged in trade discussions for Dan Haren, as the Diamondbacks appear intent on trading their ace righthander.

Haren, who turns 30 in September, has a 7-8 record and 4.60 ERA in 21 starts. In 141 innings, he has struck out 141 and walked 29, an impressive ratio. He has allowed 23 homers, second-most in the major leagues.

Diamondbacks president Derrick Hall confirmed that the Yankees are among "a few teams" who are engaging in discussions about Haren. Hall said there is no front-runner and that other clubs have made offers that are "of at least equal value" to what the Yankees are proposing. He said no trade is imminent.

The Diamondbacks have long coveted pitcher Zach McAllister, whom the Yankees were prepared to give up in the Cliff Lee trade.

Yankees officials like Haren but are wary of how his stuff would translate to the AL East (he was 43-34 with a 3.64 ERA for the Athletics from 2005-07). Haren also has more than $30 million coming to him, as he's making $8.25 million this season and is owed $12.75 million next year and again in 2012. He then has a $15.5-million team option for 2013 with a $3.5-million buyout.

Arizona is looking for young pitching. The Yankees' current top prospect is catcher Jesus Montero. Their top pitching prospects include righthanders Andrew Brackman, Dellin Betances and Hector Noesi. Righty Ivan Nova reportedly has been mentioned in trade talks.

The Yankees also have spoken with Houston about Roy Oswalt but are not convinced that the Astros actually will trade the righthander. In the meantime, they continue to look for trade options that will upgrade their bench or their bullpen.

Extra bases

Nick Swisher, scratched from the lineup before the game with a sore left Achilles, said he looked at video of Thursday night's game but still wasn't sure when the injury occurred. "When I went to bed last night, I felt fine," said Swisher, who was replaced by Colin Curtis. "Got up this morning to go to the bathroom and didn't.'' . . . Sergio Mitre said he's "good to go" for Saturday and feels no added pressure making his first start since May 16 in place of the injured Andy Pettitte (groin). The righthander has thrown no more than 75 pitches during his rehab stint after an oblique injury, which means the maximum number of pitches he can throw Saturday is 90, Joe Girardi said. "And depending on how hot it is," Girardi added, "that number might decrease." . . . Sean O'Sullivan will try to earn his second win over the Yankees in less than a week Sunday, thanks to a trade that sent him from the Angels to the Royals. O'Sullivan, 22, who held the Yankees to two hits in six innings in the Angels' 10-2 win Tuesday, will face Phil Hughes again.
