Before spring training, general manager Brian Cashman often ran through the handful of top Yankees pitching prospects whom he said would be given a shot to win one of the two open spots at the back end of the rotation.
Among them was righthander David Phelps, 24, the team's 14th-round selection out of Notre Dame in the 2008 draft.
Phelps was named the organization's "Pitcher of the Year" in 2010 after going 6-0 with a 2.04 ERA in 14 starts for Double-A Trenton and 4-2 with a 3.07 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
But because of the success of Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia, Phelps saw limited spring training action, going 1-1 with a 10.50 ERA in four games and six innings.
Now Phelps has positioned himself to get consideration for a call-up to the Yankees should the need arise. He entered Thursday's action 4-4 with a 3.50 ERA in 10 starts and had struck out 51 and walked 15 in 612/3 innings.
