Yanks thin on depth chart
What is Joe Girardi to do? The starters are not hitting, but the reserves aren't, either. Wnen Girardi wants to rest Derek Jeter, he gets Ramiron Pena, who is batting .231 with one double and a triple.
Aging catcher Jorge Posada is battered and in a slump--hitless since Sept. 7 when he took a foul tip off his mask--but backup Francisco Cervelli is at .258 with 63 hits, 50 singles. Posada's rest came when it was thought he might have a concussion.
In the outfield, Nick Swisher is hurting and Greg Golson replaced him Monday night. The kid is hitting .231 with one double. He's had only had 20 major league at-bats.
Austin Kearns, acquired from Cleveland to provide some depth, played for injured Brett Gardner. Kearns has had a few productive games, but as a Yankee is at .234 in 89 at-bats.
To generate some offense, Girardi may be forced to put Marcus Thames--a poor defensive player--back in the the outfield and place Lance Berkman at DH.
Let's see what tonight's lineup will bring. Less than eight hours to game time.
