Gasol would fit in nicely with Knicks

MEMPHIS -- Last season Rudy Gay's willingness to talk with New York reporters about his free agency status -- and interest in playing in Mike D'Antoni's system -- was parlayed into a maximum contract offer from the Grizzlies on the very first day of free agency in July. Marc Gasol, whose name is very high on the Knicks' wish list as an offseason acquisition, didn't sound like he was looking to follow the same script.

"I'm not worried about it," Gasol said of his status as a restricted free agent. "I'm just trying to enjoy my situation right now and make the playoffs. That's the only thing that I really care about right now.

"When the time comes, we'll see what happens and we're going to study every situation by itself," he added. "But right now, we've got too nice of a present to worry about the future."

Gasol, the younger brother of Lakers star Pau Gasol, has the skill set that would fit perfectly with Amar'e Stoudemire and Carmelo Anthony in the frontcourt. The 7-footer, who is a terrific passer, went into Wednesday night's game averaging 11.8 points and 6.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.

Knicks fix

Former Knick Zach Randolph will also be looking for a new contract this offseason as an unrestricted free agent and he sounded annoyed that the Grizzlies decided not to sign him to an extension. "I thought it should've been done," he said. "But it's a business, nothing personal. I've just got to come out and do my job every day and let everything else take care of itself." Randolph, who went into Wednesday's game averaging his usual double-double of 20.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game, is looking to make the playoffs for the first time since his second season in Portland in 2002-03 . . . Shawne Williams was back in his hometown but the Knicks forward, who has dealt with several off-the-court issues here, said, "There's a lot of people I don't hear from," he said. "People that I don't want to see don't want to see me, either."
