SIGNS WITH KNICKS
Feb. 17, 2012
Smith signs with the Knicks midway through the 2011-2012 season for a pro-rated portion of the Knicks' $2.5 million mini-midlevel exception. Smith, who had been playing in China for the Zhejiang Golden Bulls, averages 12.5 points, 2.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds and 27.6 minutes in 35 games. The Knicks sign Smith to a one-year, $2.8 million deal with a player option for a second year. |

May 25, 2012

Smith wins the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award after averaging 18.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.4 assists off the bench in 2012-13. |

THE ELBOW
April 28, 2013
Smith is suspended for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals for throwing an elbow at Boston's Jason Terry in Game 3. The Knicks were leading the series, 3-0, at that point, but wouldn't clinch until a Game 6 victory. Smith returns for Game 5, but he's not the same player for the rest of the playoffs. He is fined $5,000 for flopping in Game 1 of the semifinals as the Knicks lose to the Indiana Pacers. |

NEW CONTRACT
July 4, 2013
Smith re-signs with the Knicks for three years and $17 million. |

KNEE SURGERY
July 15, 2013
A few days after returning to the Knicks, Smith has two surgical procedures on his left knee -- to repair a patellar tendon and a torn meniscus in his left knee, possibly explaining some of his poor play in the playoffs. |

Smith is suspended for violating the NBA’s anti-drug program. Smith's suspension is for five games without pay, forcing him to miss the start of the 2013-14 season. |

Jan. 8, 2013 The NBA fines Smith $50,000 "for recurring instances of unsportsmanlike conduct" after Smith twice tried to untie opponents' shoelaces (and succeeding the first time). |
