Tyson Chandler is getting close to returning from a broken right leg and could be back as early as Wednesday night in Milwaukee.

Mike Woodson said Chandler will go through a "full-blown" practice Tuesday and play five-on-five for the first time since suffering the injury Nov. 5 against Charlotte. The most contact he's had to this point was three-on-three last week.

Chandler suffered the injury six weeks ago Tuesday, and his timetable to return was four to six weeks. Woodson said it will depend on how Chandler feels after Tuesday's practice. "He's close," he said. "He's getting close, perhaps Wednesday. Maybe."

Chandler missed his 20th game Monday night, when the Knicks, who have missed his defensive presence, played Washington.

Still monitoring Amar'e

Woodson said Amar'e Stoudemire "complained" of soreness in his knees before playing his fourth game in five nights Saturday. Woodson said he has to continue to "monitor" Stoudemire, who shot 1-for-7 and had four points in 19:06 Monday night. Said Woodson, "We're not out of the woods."

Stoudemire said he felt fine before Monday night's game.

Woodson and J.R. 'fine'

Woodson didn't deny a report that he and J.R. Smith had a heated exchange during last Wednesday's win over Chicago. "I'm not going to sit here and air out things that go on in our locker room," Woodson said. "J.R. and I are fine." Smith took just one shot in Boston two nights later, leading to a belief that he staged a protest. "I'm not airing that out because that wasn't even the issue," Woodson said.

Martin's status

Woodson said Kenyon Martin (strained abdomen) will "be out for a little while." When asked if that means a week or two, he said, "Somewhere in that neighborhood."
