KNICKS AT A GLANCE
COACH: Mike D’Antoni (fourth season, 103-143, .419) LAST SEASON: (42-40, .512, second in Atlantic Division) PLAYOFFS: Lost to Boston in four games in first round.
3 THINGS WE LIKE THE BIG THREE The Tyson Chandler trade came together very quickly and possibly gives the Knicks the best front line in the NBA along with Carmelo Anthony and Amar’e Stoudemire. ROSTER STABILITY For the first time in who knows how many years, the Knicks likely will not make any major moves during the season. Even in the frenetic, lockout-shortened season, the players and coaches should know who and what they are come playoff time. MIKE WOODSON Mike D’Antoni is not known for teaching defense, so the addition of Woodson as a defensive-minded assistant can only help the Knicks do more than pay lip service to the part of the game that becomes most important in the postseason.
3 THINGS WE DON’T LIKE WHAT’S THE POINT? With Baron Davis, Toney Douglas and Mike Bibby, the Knicks hope to find a point guard who can lead them. But none of them is a sure thing. AMAR’E’S BACK Stoudemire has much more help than he did for most of his first Knicks season. But will his troublesome back hold up over the rugged 66-game season? Stoudemire already has talked about taking games off to stay healthy. BENCH SCORING Who is going to provide the scoring spark when Stoudemire and Anthony are on the bench? That’s why the Knicks went hard after old friend Jamal Crawford.
FRESH FACE IMAN SHUMPERT The rookie from Georgia Tech could be the point guard of the future. He was a revelation during the shortened training camp. He doesn’t lack for confidence or the willingness to shoot.
HERE FOR NOW MIKE BIBBY Once Davis is healthy, Bibby could be relegated to fourth or fifth guard in the rotation. You know, the one who sits on the bench and cheers for his teammates. After his dismal performance in the NBA Finals for the Heat, it’s not clear how much Bibby has left.
