DURHAM, N.C. -- Jason Kidd has been suspended for two games for pleading guilty to driving while impaired, the NBA announced Friday.

The suspension, which was expected since the league has a precedent whe handing out discipline for such incidents, means Kidd won't be on the sidelines when the Nets open their season against the Cavs in Cleveland on Oct. 30. Kidd will also miss the Nets' home opener versus the two-time defending champion Heat on Nov. 1.

So Kidd's regular-season coaching debut will come Oct. 3 against the Magic in Orlando. He was non-committal about whether top assistant Lawrence Frank will take over the head coaching duties during the suspension.

"I think we all knew that was going to come at some point," Kidd said following practice at Duke University Friday. "You have to be responsible and the league came down with the suspension and I accept that. And for that, as if a player is out, guy's got to step up. My coaching staff is well capable of stepping up for the two games."

Kidd pleaded guilty in Southampton Town Justice Court in July to a misdeamonor drunken driving charge for a July 15, 2012, crash in Water Mill. He was placed on probation and agreed to speak to high school students about the dangers of driving drunk as part of a plea deal.

The Nets feel they'll still be in good hands with Frank around, believing it'll help the continuity once Kidd serves his suspension.

"We pretty much knew this was coming," Deron Williams said. "It's pretty mandatory for the NBA to issue a two-game suspension for these types of instances. So, it is good. It's good to have Coach Frank, somebody who's out here teaching every day. He's coaching. I mean, he is the head coach.

"So, we definitely will be comfortable with him until J. can get back."

In a statement, GM Billy King said: "The decision is consistent with what the league has done in the past and we look forward to Jason leading our team versus Orlando and the rest of the year."
