Ronaldo, 34, retired Monday because his body no longer can meet soccer's demands, ending a magnificent career in which the striker won two World Cups with Brazil and starred for top European teams. With tears on his cheeks, he announced his decision in Sao Paulo. He played 18 years despite repeated knee trouble and was a three-time FIFA player of the year and the top scorer in World Cup history.

"It's very hard to leave something that made me so happy," Ronaldo said. "Mentally, I wanted to continue, but I have to acknowledge that I lost [the fight] to my body."

NHLForsberg retires again after 2 games

Avalanche forward Peter Forsberg is retiring after playing only two games in his latest comeback. A chronic foot ailment again cut short his career. After a brief return in 2008, he came back recently.

Forsberg was arguably the NHL's best two-way player in his prime, helping the Avalanche win Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001 and earning the league MVP award in 2003.

COLLEGE HOOPSK-State upsets No. 1 Kansas

Hours after moving from No. 2 to No. 1 in The Associated Press poll, Kansas lost, 84-68, to archrival Kansas State. Jacob Pullen scored a career-high 38 points and the host Wildcats (17-9, 5-6 Big 12) shot 56 percent from the field. Kansas State lost 42 of its previous 44 games against the Jayhawks (24-2, 9-2).

Kansas replaced Ohio State atop the poll. Completing the top 10 are Ohio State, Texas, Pitt, Duke, San Diego State, Brigham Young, Notre Dame, Georgetown and Wisconsin.

Syracuse ends skid at Carrier Dome

Brandon Triche had 20 points as No. 17 Syracuse rallied to beat West Virginia, 63-52, and snap a three-game skid at the Carrier Dome. The Orange (21-6, 8-6 Big East) hadn't lost four in a row at home since 1962-63.

NBABobcats still have Lakers' number

Gerald Wallace had 20 points as the host Bobcats beat the Lakers, 109-89. Charlotte is on an 8-2 streak against the two-time defending champions, who suffered their most lopsided loss of the season.
