Briefs: Serena loses cool, U.S. Open tuneup
TENNIS
Serena loses temper, match
Serena Williams lost her cool and her 19-match winning streak at the Western & Southern Open in Mason, Ohio, on Friday. Williams flubbed routine shots while falling to Angelique Kerber, 6-4, 6-4. She hadn't lost a set since she won the title match at Wimbledon.
After losing a game in the second set, she threw her racket at the ground, picked it up and slammed it on the court again.
"I probably need a break," she said after bowing out of the U.S. Open tuneup. "I'll be better in New York, I promise."
Older sister Venus reached the semifinals of a tournament for the first time this season by beating Samantha Stosur. She next faces Li Na. Petra Kvitova will face Kerber.
On the men's side, Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin del Potro won in straight sets, setting up a rematch of their bronze medal match at the Olympics, won by Del Potro. Top-ranked Roger Federer will face Stanislas Wawrinka.
