The years of hard work and staying in shape finally paid off for Hofstra’s Steve Bonanno as he earned All-America status after scoring a 10-4 overtime victory on Friday night against Anthony Zanetta in a fourth-round consolation match at the NCAA Division I Wrestling championships in St. Louis.
“He was trying to go for something big [in overtime],” the 125-pound junior said of Zanetta.
The redshirt junior didn’t get any further than the fourth-round consolation match, but he’s proud of what he accomplished at the Scott Trade Center.
“I’ve been training a long time for this,” said Bonanno. “It still hasn’t sunk in just yet.”
Bonanno, who actually had a pin taken away from after the referees consulted a video, took a 7-4 in the overtime session and scored a double leg take down in the final seconds to provide the final margin.
Hofstra's Justin Accordino (149 pounds) also earned All-American status after scoring an 11-3 decision over Nick Lester in a championship quarterfinal match. Accordino and Bonanno are the 17th and 18th Hofstra wrestlers to earn All-American status.
