Adrian Sorichetti did not have a game like he did Tuesday night since he was a young boy.
The Hofstra junior midfielder scored a career-high seven goals and added three assists to lead No. 19 Hofstra to a 14-10 win over St. John's at Shuart Stadium. Sorichetti's seven goals were the most since Jim Femminella had seven in 2003 and three shy of Hofstra's all-time single-game record by Michael LaCrosse in 1989.
"I owe that to my teammates," said Sorichetti, who was unaware of how close he was to the Hofstra single-game record. "They obviously found me out there."
Sorichetti had a hand in the first eight goals for Hofstra (4-3), which led 7-4 at halftime. He played sparingly in the third quarter, making any chance of breaking LaCrosse's record nearly impossible.
Sorichetti was masterful on his fifth goal, going from his right to his natural left side, whipping his stick across his body to the right side of the net to make the score 6-3 with 4:04 to go in the first half.
"Basically S-dodging, running around the guys, trying to get my strong hand and finding the open net," Sorichetti said.
Torin Varn scored back-to-back goals early in the fourth quarter to put Hofstra ahead 13-6 with 10:34 to go. St. John's (4-3) responded with a 4-0 run in a span of 3:49, with three goals coming from St. Dominic graduate Terence Leach, to cut the gap to 13-10 with 5:14 to go.
"We knew that they weren't going away. It was going to be a fight till the bitter end," Hofstra coach Seth Tierney said. "It got a little bit crazy at maybe 13-10, we had to call a timeout. We did a little in through your nose and out through your mouth, big breath. At that point in time we relaxed. Adrian found himself open at the end."
Stony Brook loses. Junior Nick Watson scored a career-high three goals and three other players had two goals apiece, but Siena's Bryan Neufeld totaled five goals and three assists to lead the host Saints (4-3) to a 12-11 comeback win over Stony Brook (1-6).
Stony Brook women fall. Claire Petersen posted a five-point night, and freshman Amber Kupres notched her third hat trick of the season, but the Stony Brook (5-3) took a 21-7 loss at No. 5 Maryland (8-2).
