Corwin leads Wantagh softball
Taylor Corwin survived a pitcher's duel, striking out six and scattering eight hits as No. 9 Wantagh edged eighth-seeded North Shore, 1-0, Saturday in a Nassau Class A first-round softball game.
Corwin provided an all-around performance as she scored on Kellie Mignoli's sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth to give the Warriors the only run of the game.
Christine Kiefer went 1-for-3 and made a potential game-saving catch in the bottom of the sixth with runners on first and second. Lexi Marshall struck out 16 for North Shore (11-5). Wantagh (12-4) visits No. 1 Island Trees in a quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Island Trees 15, Lawrence 0: Nicole Pellegrino went 2-for-2 with two home runs, six RBIs and three runs and Alannah Basile (three innings) and Ashley Melendez (two innings) combined on a five-inning one-hitter to lead No. 1 Island Trees (16-2) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs.
Bethpage 9, Glen Cove 5: Jessica Lewis was 2-for-4 with three RBIs, Danielle Nendza was 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Breanna Black was 2-for-2 with two runs and three stolen bases to lead No. 6 Bethpage (5-11) in the first round of the Nassau Class A playoffs.
Mepham 2, Plainview 0: Toni Valeriano struck out 14 in a three-hitter with two walks for No. 7 Mepham (7-10) in a Nassau Class AA first-round game. Nicole Pazienza went 2-for-3 and Amanda Fucci added an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth to give the Pirates a 2-0 lead. Mepham visits No. 2 East Meadow in a quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m. Monday.
Baseball
Division 3, Floral Park 2: Joe Guarisco scored Mark Martinez with a single in the bottom of the tenth to win it for No. 10 Division (11-9) a in Nassau Class A first- round game. Stephen Humenesky went nine innings and scattered four hits with five strikeouts and Justin Wiertz went 3-for-4 for Division.
BOYS LACROSSE
Kellenberg 7, Holy Trinity 6: Joe Rizzotti's goal with 1:50 left in the second overtime won the game for Kellenberg (5-3) in CHSAA.St. Anthony's 13, Yorktown 12: Sean McDonagh's with 8:26 left in the game put St. Anthony's (13-3) ahead 13-12 in non-league. Friars coach Keith Wieczorek won his 200th career game.
St. Dominic 18, Division 14: Katie O'Brien had eight goals and two assists, including a score with 1:46 left in the second overtime to give St. Dominic (14-4) a 16-14 lead in non-league. Julia LoRusso had seven goals and an assist and scored late in the second overtime to extend St. Dominic's lead to 17-14. O'Brien added a goal with 44 seconds left for the final margin for St. Dominic, which overcame a 5-1 deficit in the first quarter. Goalie Nicole Maher entered the goal with 14:04 left in regulation and made 10 saves in that span and in the two overtime sessions. Susan Ballantyne and Jenna Rothar each had four goals for Division.
St. Anthony's 17, Sacred Heart 10: Chrissy Schrieber had four goals and an assist to lead St. Anthony's (10-0) in CHSAA.Farmingdale 19, Darien (Conn.) 14: Kim Kolodny had five goals and two assists and Amanda Turturro had three goals and five assists to lead Farmingdale (14-1) in non-league.
