Aaron Ross laughs off blooper-reel play that led to TD

Aaron Ross was able to laugh it off, but only because it didn’t really count.

“It’s one of those plays that you want to happen in the preseason and not the regular season,” he said.

Ross nearly came up with an easy interception after Andrew Luck’s pass for Reggie Wayne was a good seven yards short of its target (thanks to a quarterback hit by Keith Rivers).

“I saw when the ball left his hand and I’m thinking the whole time, ‘This is a pick,’” Ross said. “Then I look up and the lights kind of just blinded me and I lost the ball. I’m trying to let the ball fall in my lap and as soon as it hit my hands it shocked me and I tried to bring it in and it popped backwards. It was one of those freak plays that don’t count.”

The ball bounced in the air and Wayne was able to catch it behind Ross for a 28-yard touchdown.

“As soon as I hit it I was like ‘Argh!’ because I knew he was behind me,” Ross said. “As soon as I hit it, I actually found it then and then … oh, it was bad.”

Ross said he usually wears tinted contact lenses in games and has since his days at the University of Texas. But against the Colts he just didn’t put them in. He said he normally uses them when he might be fielding punts, but since he wasn’t doing that in this game he just left them out.

“I’ve never been in a situation like this,” he said.

Ross said he wanted to see the play on film.

“I know what happened,” he said, “but I want to see exactly what went wrong … It’s one of those good things that I can go home and laugh about.”
