Chad Jones’ improbable comeback appears to be one step closer to reality.
Jones, a 2010 Giants draft pick who was severely injured in a car accident later that summer, passed a physical on Monday and completed the paperwork that will allow him to attempt to make the team this summer, according to his agent Rocky Arceneaux. The Giants have yet to confirm the most recent events.
Jones, a safety from LSU, was a third-round pick but he never had a chance to participate in training camp. The car accident left his leg so mangled that doctors were concerned he may never again walk. This fall, Jones began running 40-yard dashes. He was on the sideline during the Super Bowl XLVI win over the Patriots and last week, in an interview in New Orleans, he said he was at about 80 percent full strength and was headed to New York this week. He spent the 2011 season on the reserve/non-football injury list.
The Giants begin their offseason training program on April 16 and Arceneaux said Jones will participate, although how much and even at what position is still unclear. Jones was drafted as a safety, but could move to linebacker where any loss of speed from the accident could be mitigated.
Here's an article from November that details the accident and Jones' path back to the NFL.
