It's a sign of the times, in record-setting time.

The Giants inked all seven of their draft picks to rookie contracts before they took the field Friday morning for their first workout with the team. A process that usually takes months was wrapped up within two weeks of the draft, thanks to the new collective-bargaining agreement, which pretty much establishes rookie salaries.

First-round pick David Wilson, for example, signed a four-year deal with a team option for a fifth. The deal is worth $6.684 million with a signing bonus of about $3.3 million and another $2.1 million (the first three years' salaries) guaranteed.

"It finally set in that I'm really about to be part of this team," Wilson said after his first practice. "They were the Super Bowl champions and the main goal, as coach [Tom] Coughlin said [Thursday], is to get back to it again, try to get them back-to-back."

Ohrnberger joins 'em

East Meadow's Rich Ohrnberger watched Super Bowl XLVI from a different perspective. A member of the Patriots who spent the entire season on injured reserve, he was pulling for his New England teammates. This weekend, though, he is one of the veterans trying out at the Giants' rookie minicamp. "I guess if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," the guard said. "I'm happy to be on the winning side now."

He hasn't signed with the Giants yet but is happy to be getting a chance so close to home. "I'm just happy for the opportunity,'' he said, "and assuming things go well here and they pick me up, I'm excited to do what I can for the organization."

Giant steps

WR Limas Sweed, a second-round pick of the Steelers in 2008, is at camp as a veteran tryout. He's coming back from Achilles and shoulder injuries and offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride said he still looks "rusty" . . . Seventh-round pick DT Markus Kuhn did not participate in drills because of a laceration on his leg that he suffered last week . . . TE Adrien Robinson made an impressive catch in the morning workout, but was called out for it just the same. "Coach [Mike] Pope told me I made a good catch but not a good route," Robinson said, "so I still have to work on that." Robinson closed the afternoon practice with a nice catch, too, but this time, Kevin Gilbride lamented that he'd run the wrong route . . . Third-round pick CB Jayron Hosley came up lame clutching his leg while covering a deep pass in the afternoon. He missed the rest of the practice but was able to jog off the field with the team. It appeared to be a cramp.
