Broken foot sidelines Giants' Amukamara

The Giants had to wait a week for Prince Amukamara to sign. Now they'll have to wait even longer for him to play.

The first-round draft pick, participating in his second practice with the team, fractured the fifth metatarsal bone in his left foot Saturday night and will require surgery in the coming days to have a screw inserted.

The Giants say he will be sidelined for an "undetermined period," but last year offensive lineman Will Beatty suffered a similar fracture and was out for about seven weeks.

Amukamara had only signed his contract on Friday. Saturday night's practice was his first in full pads, but about halfway through the workout Amukamara limped off the turf with a trainer by his side and was escorted out of the fieldhouse and into the main building at the Timex Performance Center.

He did not return.

The Giants were thrilled to be able to draft Amukamara, who they saw as a top 10 player, with the 19th pick.

He was not expected to be a starting player for them immediately in a secondary that already had veteran depth with Corey Webster, Terrell Thomas and Aaron Ross. But the Giants did think he would be a part of their sub packages.

Now, for at least the beginning of the season, they'll be without him.
