Brown claimed but seven go to Giants' practice squad
The Giants filled seven of their eight practice squad spots with players who had been recently waived by the team. That eighth spot likely was reserved for RB Andre Brown, but he didn't make it through the waiver gantlet.
Brown was claimed off waivers by the Broncos and will be on their active 53-man roster. The Broncos' backfield has been depleted by injuries, including the season-ending ruptured Achilles of LenDale White last week. Coincidentally, Brown had worked his way back from a ruptured Achilles suffered last summer. Brown also missed the final preseason game with the Giants with turf toe.
No teams claimed Rhett Bomar, however, and he signed with the Giants' practice squad for a second straight year.
Others who were signed to the Giants' practice squad were TEs Jake Ballard and Bear Pascoe, OL Jim Cordle, DL Nate Collins and DBs Seth Williams and Sha'reff Rashad.
Andrews coming along
If the last few years have proved anything to Shawn Andrews, it's that nothing is guaranteed. So he first wanted to make sure he was on the Giants' 53-man roster. Now that the former Eagles Pro Bowler has made the team, though, it might be just a matter of time before he's starting at guard. He certainly looked good Thursday against the Patriots in his first extensive playing time since early in the 2008 season.
Giant steps
CB Aaron Ross (foot) is expected to return to practice this week after missing time with a torn plantar fascia . . . With the loss of Brown to the Broncos, the Giants have only three running backs, and one - D.J. Ware - has a history of concussions. Look for them to add a running back on the practice squad.
