Chris Canty activated by Giants

The Giants will receive a veteran boost to their defensive line in Sunday's game against the Redskins as Chris Canty has been added to the active roster from PUP and is expected to play. Canty began training camp on PUP because of offseason knee surgery and was allowed to begin practicing with the team this week. He participated in all three practices leading up to the Redskins game.
To make room on the roster for Canty, RB Da'Rel Scott was placed in injured reserve. Scott underwent knee surgery on Tuesday.
Canty had not participated in training camp or in any practices until this week, so his reps will likely be limited against the Redskins. But Tom Coughlin said the defensive tackle was able to keep himself in good form during his time away from the field. He also attended all of the team and defensive line meetings.
"He's in outstanding shape, condition-wise," Coughlin said of Canty on Friday. "He hasn't been hit, obviously, but we'll come up with the right formula [for playing tim])."
It's unclear if Canty will start at defensive tackle. Rocky Bernard had been starting there but has missed the last two games with a quad injury. Rookie Markus Kuhn started those two games, but the Giants also used a rotation of their bigger defensive ends and linebackers - Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Paul, and even Mathias Kiwanuka - to play inside. The return of Canty likely will allow those players to remain outside as pass-rushers, which is where they excel, while Canty, Kuhn and starter LinVal Joseph handle the middle of the field.
