It’s usually around this time of training camp – about a week or so in – that players start to look forward to the preseason games. It’s a chance to hit someone on another team and not the same guys over and over again. And for running back David Wilson, it’s a chance to not get hit by someone.

Wilson, the second-year running back, said he wants to get to the games because then he’ll be able to break tackles. As it is in practice, even when the team is in full pads, running backs are subject to a modified two-hand tough rule. That doesn’t play well for Wilson’s game, which is all about quickness and eluding would-be tacklers.

“Being a running back out here in practice you get tagged up and you think to yourself: ‘He wouldn’t have made that tackle even if we did it 10 times over again,’” Wilson said today. “You just have to live with it that you got tagged. But in the game you can actually break tackles and get yards after contact. I’m definitely looking forward to contact again.”

Wilson said some of the Giants defenders even admit that there are plays where he is tagged and the ball is whistled dead even though they would not have been able to complete the tackle.

“Sometimes,” he said.
