Perry Fewell did not deny that he coaches his players to fake injuries when an offense is running a hurry-up against them. But he wouldn't admit to it either.

"I can't say I've ever done that and I can't say that I haven't done that," the Giants' defensive coordinator said Thursday.

The topic stems from an incident Monday night when Deon Grant appeared to flop and feign a knee injury to slow down a Rams drive in the first quarter. Grant insisted Wednesday that he was legitimately hurt, but in St. Louis, former Giants linebacker Bryan Kehl reportedly said that Fewell teaches his players to fake injuries to break up an offense's momentum.

Fewell used almost the exact same language Redskins coach Mike Shanahan used earlier in the week when asked if he had ever instructed a player to fake an injury. "I can't say I have," Shanahan said, "but I won't say I haven't, either."

The NFL sent a memo to all 32 teams Wednesday reminding them of league policies against faking injuries to stop the clock, and how coaches and players could be subject to fines. Also, the league said teams could be docked draft picks. The NFL has said that it is satisfied with Grant's explanation and is not looking into this specific incident.

Manningham still out

Wide receiver Mario Manningham has yet to be cleared to return to practice. Manningham missed a second straight day of on-field work. "We will continue to follow protocol and as soon as he is clear, he will go," Tom Coughlin said.

Giant steps

The Giants added two new names to their injury report: C David Baas (lower leg) was limited and DT Jimmy Kennedy (knee) did not practice . . . Coughlin said that Aaron Ross will be the starting cornerback against the Eagles despite getting benched in the third quarter on Monday against the Rams.
