Giants Game Day: Brown on deck at guard

If recently acquired guard Jamon Brown gets in Monday’s game, he’ll be the 10th different offensive lineman to play for the Giants this season. He could even be the ninth different starter for the team. At a position group where teams always strive for continuity and familiarity, Pat Shurmur said: “We don’t talk about it.”
“That ship has sailed right now, wouldn’t you agree?” Shurmur said of the group that has gone from potential “hog mollies” to hodgepodge. “We get guys ready to play and we expect that they’re going to press it forward and expedite that process.”
Draft implications
There are some games that feel like possible playoff previews. This one could be a draft order preview. And the loser will come out ahead in that race. If the season were to end after Monday night’s game, the Raiders (1-8) would have the first overall pick in the draft, followed by the loser of this game between the Giants (1-7) and the 49ers (2-7). Even if the Giants win, though, they could still improve at least one pick. Their trade of Damon Harrison to the Lions last month gives them Detroit’s fifth-round pick . . . which is actually one the Lions acquired from the 49ers.
By the numbers
2: Players in NFL history to finish a season with at least 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards. Roger Craig did it in 1985 (1,050 rushing, 1,016 receiving) and Marshall Faulk did it in 1999 (1,381 rushing, 1,048 receiving). Through eight games, Saquon Barkley is on pace for 1,038 rushing yards and 994 receiving yards.
2011: The last season in which an NFL quarterback made his first two career starts in prime-time games as Nick Mullens will do for the 49ers on Monday night. The last to do so was Tyler Palko for the Chiefs.
15: Sacks by the 49ers in the past three weeks, the third-most in the NFL during that span (the Vikings and Broncos each have 17). Now they get to face a Giants offense that has allowed a league-high 31 this season.
