A day after Cor’Dale Flott left in free agency, the Giants began Tuesday by finding a potential replacement at cornerback.
The team agreed to sign Greg Newsome II to a one-year deal worth up to $10 million, a league source confirmed to Newsday. Newsome last played for the Jaguars after a midseason trade from the Browns, who drafted him in the first round in 2021.
Contracts can’t become official until Wednesday at 4 p.m. when the new league year begins.
Newsome played 67 games with 54 starts and has four interceptions and 42 pass deflections.
He lost his starting job in 2024 after the Browns exercised his fifth-year option but regained it last season.
Newsome was traded to the Jaguars after five games and started seven of his eight games played.
He’ll be first in line to compete for the starting cornerback job opposite Paulson Adebo. However, given the length of that contract, the Giants will likely seek more depth at cornerback.
It’s a key position of need given the lack of production behind Adebo and Flott last season. Deonte Banks was demoted as a starter and continued to struggle last season when on the field. Seventh-round pick Korie Black also struggled in his rookie season.
Newsome not only brings more experience but a fresh start after parting ways with two teams.
