The Giants went to the used-car lot of wide receivers for the second straight day and came back with someone they hope can shed his lemon label.

Devin Thomas, a star at Michigan State who never flourished with the Redskins and recently was cut by the 1-9 Panthers, was awarded to the Giants off waivers. The move follows Tuesday's signing of former first-round draft pick Michael Clayton, who had spent the last month playing in the UFL.

With Steve Smith and Hakeem Nicks sidelined at least for this weekend, the Giants were in serious need of bodies at the receiver position.

Thomas has caught 40 passes for 445 yards and three touchdowns in three years in the NFL. He also has been a kickoff returner, something that might add to his value with the Giants because regular returner Will Blackmon missed yesterday's practice with a chest injury.

To make room for Thomas, the Giants put fullback Madison Hedgecock (hamstring) on injured reserve.

Diehl not working

David Diehl was expecting to get back on the field Wednesday. But Diehl (hip/hamstring) was relegated to the weight room while the team practiced. He was joined there by center Shaun O'Hara, who is working through a foot injury.

Giant steps

DE Justin Tuck (quad) missed practice with an injury he suffered Sunday when Michael Vick inadvertently kicked him in the thigh on the first play of the game. Tuck managed to have three sacks, though, and is expected to practice Thursday . . . Coughlin said Hakeem Nicks' surgery for compartment syndrome went well and he is still on a timetable to return in roughly three weeks.
