The Giants won Sunday without Hakeem Nicks, Ahmad Bradshaw and David Baas. They'd like not to have to try that again. The three offensive starters will be evaluated Tuesday for a better idea of what their availability might be Sunday against the 49ers.

"I know that they're improving," Tom Coughlin said on a conference call Monday. "We're hopeful. We have encouraging signs coming out of the training room, but I wouldn't go as far as to say what could be expected."

Bradshaw has a stress fracture in his right foot, an injury he's played with in the past. Coughlin said Friday that the running back will not need surgery, but it's still unclear how long it will be before he returns to the field.

"We'll have to wait and see exactly how he feels to put together some sort of a plan," Coughlin said.

Collapse? What collapse?

They say those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it, but the Giants will take their chances, anyway. Asked how he and his teammates will face the rest of the schedule knowing that they have a track record for second-half slides, linebacker Michael Boley said they will simply "try not to think about it."

In their seven-plus seasons under Coughlin, the Giants are 47-17 in Games 1 through 8 on their regular-season schedules, 24-32 in Games 9 through 16.

Giant steps

Cornerback Prince Amukamara (foot) seemed close to playing against the Patriots but was inactive . . . Although it appeared there was helmet-to-helmet contact, tight end Jake Ballard said the hit he took in the first quarter from linebacker Brandon Spikes was clean. "He hit me with his shoulders into my body," Ballard said. "He got a good hit."
