Giants dealing with bumps in road

The Giants had plenty of scheduling disturbances last season, whether it was being stranded in Wisconsin for an extra day or waiting in Kansas City to find out where they would play the Vikings (ultimately in Detroit).

The 2011 season hasn't even started and they've already had to deal with the lack of an offseason because of the lockout and now a preseason game that was postponed by Hurricane Irene this weekend.

"We're getting good at midstream adjustments," Tom Coughlin said. "I don't know if that is something you necessarily want to perfect, but I think we're close."

The Giants' game against the Jets was supposed to be played Saturday night but has been moved to 7 p.m. Monday. That presents a challenge for the players and coaches who now face two games in four days. They'll finish the preseason Thursday in New England.

"We can only play one game at a time," Coughlin said. "We are going to play the starters the first half on Monday night, and then we will take a look at how we will handle personnel on Thursday. That would be the game we would deviate from how we've done things in the past, simply because you are talking about only two days between games and no real practice time."

Eli Manning said having so little time between the games against the Jets and Patriots makes Monday night's preseason contest all the more important. "This game coming is going to be very important," he said. "We're going to get some looks and see how we stand against a 3-4 team, a team that does some exotic blitzes and a top-quality team. We have to make sure everybody is on the same page and communicating and everybody is doing their responsibility. Hopefully, we'll go out there and play well."

The Giants practiced early Saturday and were dismissed by 1:30 p.m. They were given Sunday off to be with their families while the storm hits. They will not spend the night before the game in a hotel, as they usually do. Instead, they will report for meetings Monday afternoon, then play the game that night. "That will be a different routine that we haven't had," Manning said. "But I think everyone has adjusted well. Obviously, we've been through this a little bit before, last year with the Minnesota game. So I think it's going pretty smoothly."

Adding to the chaos, the Giants have to make roster decisions and trim their roster from 90 to 80 by Tuesday.

"Listen, there is nothing we can do about the current set of circumstances," Coughlin said. "We have to adjust and adapt. We have been evaluating our roster since the start of training camp. All we can do is take what we have had in terms of the totality of the preseason and make our decisions based on that. There really has been no precedent for this entire preseason."
