The Giants have an interview set with a Super Bowl-winning head coach who helped turn a young quarterback into a multiple-time MVP.
No, not that one. Not yet.
Mike McCarthy, who won his title with Green Bay while helping to shape the early career of Aaron Rodgers, is scheduled to meet with the Giants on Tuesday, a source confirmed.
McCarthy, who last coached the Cowboys in 2024, will be the fifth known candidate to have an in-person interview with the Giants for their vacancy, following Mike Kafka, Kevin Stefanski, Raheem Morris and Antonio Pierce. The Giants also have conducted virtual interviews with three coordinators currently coaching for top-seeded teams in the playoffs that had a bye this weekend: Vance Joseph and Darren Rizzi of the Broncos and Klint Kubiak of the Seahawks.
McCarthy has a 174-112-2 regular-season record in 18 seasons as a head coach and has been to the playoffs in 12 of those seasons with an 11-11 postseason record. It’s very similar to the resume of the perceived front-runner for the job, John Harbaugh, who in 18 seasons with the Ravens went 180-113 in the regular season with 12 playoff appearances. He is 13-11 in the postseason.
With the Wild Card round nearly over, the Giants are expected to begin interviews with coaches from teams that played this weekend; Sports Illustrated reported on Sunday that they already had requested permission to speak with Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula after his team beat the Panthers on Saturday. Others could emerge in the coming days.
Harbaugh remains the biggest available name in the coaching cycle, however, and is expected to meet with a handful of the seven interested teams beginning this week.
According to various reports from the league’s broadcast partners throughout the weekend, Harbaugh has been studying film of potential quarterbacks he might work with, including the Giants’ Jaxson Dart, and general manager Joe Schoen has been in “direct contact” with him about the team’s job. There also was speculation that if the Packers decide to move on from head coach Matt LaFleur after their loss to Chicago on Saturday night, Green Bay would rocket to the top of Harbaugh’s list of potential teams.
Harbaugh’s agent, Bryan Harlan, is the son of former Packers team president Bob Harlan.
