One of the most disappointing aspects for a disappointing Giants season was the play of the defensive line. Tom Coughlin is hoping that Robert Nunn can help turn that around.

Nunn, who has coached in the NFL for 10 seasons - including four as a defensive tackles coach of the Packers and last year as co-defensive line coach of the Buccaneers - was hired by the Giants Wednesday to be the defensive line coach under coordinator Perry Fewell. He replaces Mike Waufle, a popular coach who along with coordinator Bill Sheridan was dismissed after the season.

"I feel very strongly [he] will bring the best out of the players that he coaches," Coughlin said. "He will provide structure. He will gain their trust. He will prove to the players the techniques that are important. When that happens and they buy into it, I think the results will come back for us.

"He will coach a very important position on our team, one that we will rely on heavily to bring us back to the level of championship play," Coughlin added.

Nunn was on the Packers' staff when the Giants beat them in the NFC Championship Game two years ago. That experience, along with the recommendations of other coaches, convinced Fewell.

"I look for him to bring to our defensive line fundamentals, technique, toughness, energy and to bring us together as a group to help make us a good defensive line unit," Fewell said.

Fewell said in a radio interview on Tuesday that he does not expect to make any further changes to the Giants' defensive coaching staff.
