Giants improve at 4th-string QB, make Micah Johnson signing official

Come September, it probably won’t mean a thing. But the Giants did some shuffling of the 79th and 80th spots on their roster today, making official one signing that had been in the air for a week and swapping out their fourth-string quarterback.

Linebacker Micah Johnson of Kentucky, who attended last week’s rookie minicamp as a tryout and then posted on his Facebook page that he would be signed by the team, is officially a Giant. He had a very strong minicamp and is 6-1, 262 pounds.

The Giants had only one open spot on their roster going into the minicamp, and most figured Johnson would be the one. But the Giants also waived QB Domenic Randolph out of Holy Cross and signed tryout Riley Skinner of Wake Forest. Skinner will presumably be a guy who will throw to other players who won’t make the team during training camp, but he could also compete with Rhett Bomar for the third quarterback job … if there is one. The last two years the Giants have used only two quarterbacks on the 53 man roster.

Of course, they had Jeff Feagles as their super-duper emergency quarterback back then. Now that Feagles is gone, perhaps they’ll consider carrying a third.

One other note: Bryan Kehl and Phillip Dillard have traded jersey numbers. So Kehl will now be wearing 55 while Dillard will be wearing 53.
